HWA Memberships
Choose the Appropriate Membership
Whether you’re an aspiring writer working toward your all-important first pro-level sale or a seasoned novelist with a dozen books to your credit, the HWA can help further your career. If you’re a producer, publisher, editor, or agent, you’ll find our networking resources invaluable. If you’re a librarian or bookseller, you’ll have an inside track on talented writers, hot new books, and likely award winners. And if you’re a fan, you’ll have access to the writers you love and will get to be an important part of the oldest and largest organization dedicated to horror.
If you have an interest in horror and horror writing, welcome! We have a membership level that’s just right for you. Find the membership level that fits you best and review the qualifications. Click the button to learn about the next steps and the documents, if any, you will need to provide.
Note: Membership dues are due on January first. The amount will be prorated if you join after March 31st. All rates for qualifying sales are listed in USD. Equivalent amounts in other currencies are also eligible.
Writer Memberships
Choose from our selection of individual writer memberships. Each membership has separate eligibility and documentation requirements. Please review the member handbook, bylaws, and membership eligibility and documentation guide prior to applying.
Affiliate Writer
If you have published at least one work meeting the criteria listed in the member eligibility and documentation guide, then apply for Affiliate Writer.
Active Pro Writer
If you are an established writer or editor meeting at least one of the criteria listed in the member eligibiity and documentation guide, then apply for Active Pro Writer.
Ally Memberships
Choose from our selection of individual ally memberships. Each membership has separate documentation requirements. Please review the member handbook, bylaws, and membership documentation guide prior to applying.
Supporting Ally
If you love horror and enjoy reading, watching or listening to horror, apply for Supporting Ally.
Associate Ally
If you are a professional other than a writer in the field of horror or dark literature, apply for Associate Ally.
Academic Ally
If you work in an academic profession and have an interest in the field of horror or dark literature, apply for Academic Ally.
Senior Memberships
Please review the Senior membership eligibility and documentation requirements listed below in addition to the member handbook and bylaws. If you have any questions, please contact our Membership Committee via email.
Senior Membership 70+
This a standard individual membership for the Active, Associate, Affiliate, and Academic levels for members who are 70+ years old.
Senior Supporting Membership 70+
This a standard individual membership for the Supporting Ally level for members who are 70+ years old.
Other Membership Options

Corporate Membership
If your company or organization supports the horror and dark literature community, apply for Corporate Membership. Corporate members receive one directory listing and ten user IDs for access to HWA’s Members Only website. All user IDs are included under one corporate membership and do not count as individual memberships. Official correspondence is sent to one designated address, and applicants must provide the same documentation required for Associate Ally membership.
Family Membership
If multiple members of your family are involved or interested in the horror and dark literature community, apply for a Family Membership. Family memberships include up to three family members, with each member receiving their own directory listing and user ID for access to HWA’s Members Only website. Membership status is based on each individual’s qualifications, and all applicants must apply separately and provide the required documentation for their membership level.
Multi-Year Memberships

5 Year Membership
This is a 5 year standard individual membership for the Active, Associate, Affiliate, and Academic levels.
